Of course, this year has special conditions. Drought, pandemic, climate change, increasing demand in the world and increasing prices accordingly. In Turkey, as in many products, wheat increases the prices of flour and bread.
Turkey's wheat production areas are shrinking. It has decreased from 9.2 million hectares to 6.8 million hectares in the last 10 years. Due to the increase in productivity, the shrinkage on the basis of area did not reflect much on production in a sense. Wheat production is 20 million tons for many years.
According to the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute, the wheat production amount, which was 20.5 million tons in 2020, is 17 million 650 thousand tons in 2021 according to the latest estimates. This is the lowest production level in the last 14 years. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) had estimated Turkey's wheat production to be 16.5 million tons months ago. The main reason for the decrease in production is the drought, which is especially effective in the Southeast, East and Central Anatolia regions.
